Welcome from the Western North America Region Director

Welcome to the 2017 Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Western Regional Meeting (WRM) in Bakersfield. We are delighted to host this event once again in San Joaquin Valley, where there is a long connection to the oil industry. The organization committee has put a lot of thought and hard work into designing a diverse and exciting conference. The theme of the conference is “Waves of Change, Oceans of Opportunity” will be reflected in every aspect of the conference, from panel discussions to the technical program.

The meeting will include a very strong technical program, continuing education courses, informative panels, detailed exhibition floor, amazing networking opportunities and thrilling events

The pre-conference will start with the Continuing Education program which features a diverse range of courses tailored for the Western Region and covering reservoir management, production optimization, facilities and safety, environment and health. The Student Paper Contest, a well-established tradition for our region, will bring together top students from the three top universities in our region, Stanford University, University of Southern California and University of Fairbanks Alaska, to compete in the Doctorate, Master and Undergraduate divisions.

The conference will be inaugurated by plenary sessions featuring speeches from industry leaders to address current challenges in our region. The WRM technical program will include approximately 90 peer-selected papers and ePosters. During the three days of the conference/meeting authors will present their latest work and developments spanning from research to practical case studies, and covering all disciplines.

andrei-popaThis year we have the privilege of hosting a distinguished guest; 2018 SPE President Darcy Spady. Darcy will deliver the keynote address during Tuesday luncheon, and participate in the Regional Awards ceremony presenting the awards to our deserving professionals. Congressman McCarthy will be the keynote speaker during the Wednesday luncheon.

In addition to the technical program, the WRM committee has planned and organized a series of activities staring with the inaugural welcoming session on Monday evening, an unforgettable wine trip to Paso Robles and the traditional Golf tournament at Sundale Country Club.

I hope this exciting agenda will encourage everyone – from students and young professionals to SPE members and non-members, to participate and learn about latest technologies as well as challenges and opportunities ahead.
On behalf of SPE Western North America Region, I thank you for participating and hope you enjoy all that WRM 2017 has to offer.
